Compliance Tip of the Week: Verifying Social Security Payments 10/22/2019

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 67 million Americans will increase 1.6 percent in 2020.

So how do you verify the new payment amounts for Social Security, SSD, SSI, and SSP?

Social Security award letter

  • The annual award letter is acceptable provided that it represents the amount received prior to deductions and is date stamped the day it is received (for verification) in the leasing office.
  • If the annual letter is unavailable, the household member may obtain a letter at the local Social Security office, or online at https://www.ssa.gov/
    • This website may also be used for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability (SSD).
    • State Supplemental Payments (SSP) may be verified through various state offices – for more information, contact your Compliance Specialist.
  • Alternately, the leasing staff member can call the respective Social Security or state office with the household member present and request a letter to be faxed to the leasing office.
